What is malnutrition?
Lack of proper nutrition, caused by not having enough to eat, not eating enough of the right foods, or eating foods that are low in nutrition. Malnutrition is when a person’s diet does not provide enough nutrients or the right balance of nutrients for optimal health.
The world is right now facing the worst global food crises in decades. The combined impact of conflict, climate change, COVID, and the cost of inflating food prices have left 970,000 people across five countries to face famine conditions over the next few months.
Malnutrition caused by extreme hunger remains one of the biggest killers of young children around the world today. In Somalia alone, more than half of children aged under five are facing acute malnutrition, with one in six suffering from the deadliest form.
What are the long-term effects of malnutrition?
In addition to the consequences in terms of mortality, malnutrition has serious adverse effects on physical development in terms of delayed growth and physical disability and is associated with cognitive and behavioural disorders in children, particularly when it occurs during childhood.
How does malnutrition effect a child?
Symptoms of malnutrition in a child can include, not growing or putting on weight at the expected rate (faltering growth), changes in behavior, such as being unusually irritable, slow, or anxious, low energy levels and tiring more easily than other children.
How does malnutrition affect older adults?
It can weaken immune systems making it difficult to fight off disease. Malnutrition leaves our elderly vulnerable to infection, slower recovery time, and slower wound healing. It also causes weight and muscle loss that can lead to frailty, balance issues, falls, broken bones, disability, and loss of independence.
Malnutrition can result in unplanned weight loss, a low body mass index (BMI) and vitamin and mineral deficiencies. This can leave you feeling tired, weak and affect your ability to recover from an illness.
What are the main dangers of malnutrition?
Here is a view but it is not limited to this list:
- Chronic illnesses, to mention a few, cancer, diabetes, lung disease.
- Slow healing of common illnesses.
- Dental problems.
- Physical and mental disability.
- Demise.

What percentage of the world is malnourished?
Nearly 924 million people (11.7% of the global population) faced food insecurity at severe levels, an increase of 207 million in two years.
How many world hunger deaths are there per day?
Each day, 25,000 people, including more than 10,000 children, die from hunger and related causes. Some 854 million people worldwide are estimated to be undernourished, and high food prices may drive another 100 million into poverty and hunger.

Each day, between 7,750 and 15,345 people die from hunger and malnutrition, according to a 2021 report from Oxfam.
This means as many as 11 people die from hunger each minute. According to the report, this is more than the current global death rate for COVID, which was around 7 people per minute in July of 2021.
